The textile sector is one of the most impactful industries worldwide, with far-reaching environmental, social and economic consequences. Given that up to 80 per cent of a product’s environmental impact is determined during the design phase, it is crucial for designers to understand the entire value chain and to intervene in it consciously.
Denim Driven Design presents the results of a collaboration between LUCA School of Arts, alumnus Tessa Borrenbergs and JBC (Anaïs Claes), as part of the Circular Design Module. Third-year Product Design students investigated the entire life cycle of denim and developed design proposals based on a material-driven design methodology.
The exhibition does not showcase finished end products, but rather a series of experimental material studies and design strategies. These explore how denim can be utilised in a more sustainable and circular way. The project emphasises design as a research tool and offers insight into alternative scenarios for the future of textiles.
The choice of denim as a starting point arose from a dialogue with JBC, which, through its circular jeans brand HNST, is actively committed to sustainable innovation within the sector.
