Only when they are subjects of conversation or text,
do buildings become truly social,
because until people have exchanged thoughts about them,
buildings remain just isolated objects.
Without language, there would be no architecture.

- Adrian Forty

Discover the design stories behind Kortrijk's facades.
Walk 5 kilometres through the heart of the city and be surprised by the stories behind the facades. This unique architecture walk is a tribute to Filip Cnockaert, founder of Cnockaert Architecture. More than 35 years of inspiring work in and around Kortrijk.

A walk full of inspiration.
Each project on this route tells a story about architecture, public space and connection. Filip Cnockaert believed in architecture as more than just building, as a way of bringing people together, connecting past and future.

A passionate architect.
He was a modest and passionate architect. An architect who loved designing, connecting and who believed in the social role of architecture. He looked beyond form and function, he was someone who saw architecture as a living conversation with people, time and space.

His architecture lives on, not just in stone, wood or concrete, but in the way it brings people together.

Walk along.
An inspiring walk around architecture and public space.  Discover the buildings that play an important role in the more than 35 years of experience of the Cnockaert firm of architects.

Soon you will be able to download the full route, including stories at each building. Discover how architecture lives in the city and in the people who are part of it. Along the way, you will also pass pleasant places to stop or chat.

Architect Filip Cnockaert not only designed places, he also shaped how people live, live and work together. Each building on this route testifies to a different time, a different question, a different solution. From Italian Renaissance to reconversion: a walk through time. He believed that the best ideas arise where people share their knowledge and enhance each other's creativity. So he collaborated with Jordi Farrando, among others, for the shopping mall and several artists whom he set free in their creativity.

Filip Cnockaert's buildings and designs are a tangible legacy. We can continue to experience, admire and use it. In this sense, his spirit, his vision and his creativity continue to live on in the space around us.

"Behind every facade is a vision. Behind every stone an encounter." Marie-Amélie.
Guided walk by Marie-Amélie.

Welcome to the Creativity Summit.
As one of the annual highlights of the WONDER Creativity Festival, this year’s edition focuses on groundbreaking initiatives in the field of biobased building materials and on strengthening creative professionals in their practice. Join us for an inspiring lunch session with three international experts who will speak about sustainable innovation and the crucial role of design in shaping a more resilient, creative future.

Moderator Ann Claes will guide us through the program and introduce our speakers:

Henriëtte Waal – Artistic Director, Designer, Researcher – Atelier Luma, Veenweide Atelier – France, Netherlands
As Artistic Director of Atelier Luma in Arles, Henriëtte leads research and development on biobased materials, creating new opportunities at the intersection of design, science, and local production. Atelier Luma has become a reference point for supporting young designers and creatives, enabling them to explore sustainable approaches to material use and design practices. Alongside her work in Arles, Henriëtte is responsible for the Veenweide Atelier in Friesland, which focuses on the ecological and cultural potential of biobased resources within regional landscapes. She is also involved in a range of initiatives across Europe, all aimed at promoting design as a tool for environmental innovation and community development. Her work demonstrates how design can drive systemic change while empowering new generations of creative professionals.

Amanda Brezell – Co-founder, Creative Director & Lead Farmer – Fennigan’s Farms – Detroit
Fennigan’s Farms is an inspiring initiative that places biobased practices at the heart of Detroit’s renewal. By transforming vacant lots into productive green spaces, Fennigan’s Farms not only promotes sustainable food systems but also strengthens community resilience. This work is part of a broader movement reshaping Detroit through grassroots projects that combine local stewardship, environmental responsibility, and social impact. What makes Fennigan’s Farms especially compelling is the way it brings together farmers, neighbors, and creatives—designers, artists, and makers—who pool their ideas and skills to build inclusive ecosystems. In her talk, Amanda will highlight how such collaborations create new opportunities for biobased experimentation, community-driven revitalization, and the role of creative practitioners.

MOGU – Italy
We will also meet Mogu, a design-driven company pioneering the use of mycelium and other natural processes to create biobased materials for interiors and architecture. By converting agricultural and textile waste into high-quality acoustic panels, wall coverings, and flooring, Mogu shows how circular systems can deliver both performance and beauty. Their work is rooted in a vision where design, science, and ecology converge to create healthier and more sustainable living spaces. With a commitment to honesty, innovation, and environmental responsibility, Mogu demonstrates how nature can guide the future of building and design.

Program
10:30 - Doors open
10:45 - Start of talks with a welcome by Designregio Kortrijk

Gardening as an Attitude
Two practices on urban green in a changing climate
Wagon Landscaping (FR)
Kollektif Landscape (BE)

A garden is not a project, but a relationship that must be maintained with care and affection. How can the gardener’s attitude guide design processes in a changing climate?

The Paris-based office Wagon Landscaping focuses mainly on small urban “gardens.” Although their projects address a niche of small-scale situations, the attention to and engagement with landscape that Wagon applies provide relevant answers to the question of how we might reconsider our approach to landscape in other typologies and scales.

Their work is often conceptually intriguing and bold, yet rooted in minimal transformation, engaging primarily with the conditions for growth and the study of soil, plant, and water dynamics. A series of projects revolves around breaking open asphalt and explores the aesthetics that emerge from an ethical stance of leaving material in place. They construct most of their projects themselves; the office is also well equipped with shovels, rakes, and hoes.

The questions that arise from this position are urgent. To what extent must we change our engagement with landscape, program, transformation, and maintenance in order to minimize negative environmental impacts? Where is the line between resource-intensive constructions and Wagon’s DIY approach of reuse?

Kollektif is a landscape architecture and urban design office from Ghent, founded by Björn Bracke and Joke Vande Maele. Their projects often focus on green spaces in the city. They work on places that soften the experience of the urban environment and prioritize connection on many levels (including between plants).

What can the gardener’s approach teach us about the very notion of a ‘project’ within landscape architecture?

Flanders DC & Designregio Kortrijk
As a designer, you have the power to shape the future—literally. But how can you use your creativity to design not only beautiful but also sustainable products? The shift towards a circular economy requires products that last longer, make more efficient use of materials, and eliminate energy waste. This calls for a radically new way of thinking and doing.
During this workshop, we’ll immerse you in the world of circular design and show you how you can contribute to a sustainable future. You’ll learn the basics of circular design principles and business models, inspired by leading real-world examples and the groundbreaking work Products that Last from TU Delft.
But we go beyond theory. Together with other creative professionals, you’ll immediately apply this knowledge to your own work. You’ll discover how you, as a designer, can be a catalyst for change within your company or for your clients. We’ll give you the tools and strategies to not only apply circular design but also actively put it on the agenda.
This intensive, one-day workshop is more than just a training—it’s a call to action. Become the designer who not only makes the world more beautiful but also more sustainable. Join our 1-day workshop at Flanders DC—note: places are limited!
