On Friday 18 October, Designregio Kortrijk, Allaert Aluminium, Joli, Modular Lighting Instruments, Vincent Sheppard and Wever & Ducré cordially invite you to ‘Brunch & Talks’, an inspiring event on circularity in (interior) architecture.
Wonder Club is the collective of design companies in Kortrijk UNESCO Design Region, powered by Designregio Kortrijk. In the framework of WONDER Creativity Festival in Kortrijk (17.10 - 03.11) and the professional design fair Design Nation (17 & 18.10) in Kortrijk Xpo, they organise a brunchevent for professionals and interested parties in the interior and construction sector around circularity in (interior) architecture. The brunchevent will take place on Friday morning 18 October at the Budafabriek, Kortrijk.
Headliner Jens Heitland, former Global Head of Innovation at IKEA Centres, will focus on the concrete implementation of circular design, based on his experience with ‘The Sustainable IKEA Store’. Providing inspiration and practical tools, he will help you meet the challenges of circular design.
Valentine Jiang and Camilla Schousboe of Normann Copenhagen presents their new collection ‘Mat’. Years of research preceded the launch of their seating made from hemp and seaweed. With their new bio-based collection, they challenge conventional thinking in the furniture sector.
Architect and repurposer Pieter Verfaillie of architecture and consultancy firm Erfgoed en Visie and Herbé gives an insight into the great potential of used locations and materials. As a re-appropriator, he starts from his DNA as an architect, but goes beyond design with his team. The aim is to maximise the lifespan of their buildings and their materials.

Info session: Product-as-a-service in mechanical engineering

Organised by
Voka West-Vlaanderen, Sirris en Designregio Kortrijk
Mechanical engineering in Flanders scores strongly in terms of added value, employment and exports. Unfortunately, the sector also has one of the highest material footprints within the Flemish manufacturing industry. Product-as-a-Service (PaaS) business models, in which the manufacturer retains ownership of its product, could provide a solution here. But the switch from producer to service provider has a far-reaching impact on very diverse aspects: from product design, over customer relations and employee deployment, to the legal and financial framework.

On the initiative of the partner consortium Voka West-Vlaanderen, Sirris and Designregio Kortrijk, three machine builders joined the living lab project Circular Machine Building two years ago. The aim of the project: to investigate together with experts whether and how this business model is feasible for them. Two years later, they share their insights, learnings and stumbling blocks.

What to expect.
This session goes beyond just informing you about the business model. We will hear directly from a machine builder and an expert how they went about prototyping and implementing the business model and what the state of play is today.

For whom?
This info session / workshop is aimed at machine builders, but other manufacturing companies interested in the circular Product as a Service business model are also welcome (CEOs, innovation managers, sustainability managers,...).

Speakers

Sam Mulkay is managing director and founder of 3D Tools. The machines 3D Tools designs and builds in-house are mainly for the chemical industry. Under the brand name Gravifill, 3D Tools produces filling machines for the paint industry, among others. As part of the project, 3D Tools investigated the possibilities of marketing these filling machines on a rental basis.

For this, 3D Tools was closely advised by Brian Legein. Brian guides companies in prototyping and developing complex services and processes. In his book ‘Put on your lean glasses’, he demonstrates with principles, tips, templates and tools how processes can be accelerated, simplified and improved.

This info session is organised as part of the Circular Machine Building project.

Wondering how to combine the techniques of 3D printing and weaving? In this master class, we seek out where disciplines intersect. Guided by Amandine David, we will dive into digital crafts and throw weaving together with 3D printing. Based on weaving structures, you will design your own 3D models, which you will process with weaving techniques and flexible materials.

Designer Amandine David, winner of the Henry van de Velde Young Talent Award only last year, will show you in this workshop series how the up and down movements of a loom and the ones and zeros of computer language are actually very similar. This immediately creates opportunities to merge tradition and contemporary technology into crazy, versatile and original weaving creations.

In collaboration with BUDA::lab and VAKlab.

What to expect.
Amandine starts the workshop with an introduction to her work and the insertion of ‘digital crafts’. You will then experiment with weaving through previously 3D printed pieces. Based on the observation of these first examples, you will devise your own project. Under the guidance of volunteers from the BUDA::lab, you will make a 3D model of your piece. You do not need any prior knowledge of 3D drawing programmes for this.
Between the two workshop days, the designed 3D pieces are further printed in the BUDA::lab.

During the second day, you will weave the pieces you designed. You will incorporate threads, yarns and other flexible materials. This is how you will create unique weaving creations, on the border of craft and technology.

At this book presentation, Femke Vanbelle (Bruges) and Flore Deman (Waregem) introduce their latest picture book 'Kamertje ikke'. Discover the story and the illustration process. Afterwards, you can get creative in a workshop inspired by 'Kamertje ikke'.
'Kamertje ikke' is a poetic, colorful story for dreamy souls, energetic children, and everyone in between.
'Will you come play with me?' the boy asks the girl. He shows her the place where he can truly be himself. The blue of the room consists of transparent clouds, dark deep seas, and shimmering dragonflies. The two friends dive into sparkling water, weave branches in the ancient forest, and play hide and seek with a red fox. 'Will you come play with me?' the girl then asks. Her room is bathed in bright colors. Everything wiggles and crawls, tingles and grows - it buzzes with life, like in a bustling, densely populated city. Will you tumble, roll, bounce, and stumble along with them?
Two very different children take each other into their own wonderful world: sometimes gentle as a summer breeze, then wild as a whirlwind.
» About being introverted and extroverted, about enjoying silence and going on adventures, about getting to know yourself and your friends.
Free, but registration is required.

Humans are sentient, but so are plants. To learn (and feel) more, Archipel descends on Kortrijk in October. Humans have five senses, so does a plant, as well as at least 15 others. For instance, plants warn each other with scents about hostile herbivores, form huge networks with their roots and communicate with birds, insects and each other about their environment. Not for nothing do leading scientists now put plants on the same evolutionary step as animals.

What can we learn from the networks in forests? How can urban nature achieve the same integration, biodiversity and sustainability? Urban nature (parks, etc.) is above all in the service of people, the urban dweller and her need for relaxation and rest. How can we look beyond the inherently anthropocentric nature of these places and think from nature itself? We let landscape architect Bas Smets do the talking.

The exhibition 'from the inside out' connects the immediate environment, the urban context and vast landscapes with the wondrous imagination of humanity. It is becoming increasingly clear how narrative alternatives and innovative thinking and creation processes are being sought. The works of these artists are therefore an expression of this search: where Bram Van Breda depicts impressions in textile matter from reclaimed materials, Michaël de Kok explores the layers of contemporary landscape imagery from his own wonderment. On Saturday 26 October at 16:00, Els Wuyts will engage in a conversation with both artists during Kortrijk Art Weekend. Location: Doornstraat 6.0001, Kortrijk.

Let's dive deep into the world of co-design with games and explore the crucial role of designers as facilitators at this workshop at WONDER!

How can designers actively involve people in co-design?

A workshop by design.nexus UGent, free registration, workshop is in English, lunch will be provided.
Welcome to our workshop at BUDA::lab, where we dive deep into the facilitator role of designers. A "facilitator" is someone who makes something easier. In the context of co-design, we will explore how designers can make the participation of users easier in a co-design process to learn more about their needs. The research suggests that designers' facilitator role in co-design is essential to create a more inclusive design process especially by empowering marginalized or underrepresented groups. Join us at WONDER for an interactive workshop session full of game design, insights, discussions, and hands-on activities.
The workshop will start by playing an existing game (‘The Co-design Facilitator’s Game’) that has been developed in the scope of the doctoral research of a design.nexus researcher from UGent. Then, the participants will modify this game and finally design their own games from scratch to educate designers on their facilitator role in co-design.
Are you a designer/design student/design educator? Are you interested in giving voice especially to marginalized and underrepresented people in co-design? Are you curious about the role of designers as facilitators in a co-design process? Are you also into games, especially designing your own games? Then, this workshop is for you!
The event will be in English and lunch will be provided. If you have any questions please contact Melis Örnekoğlu-Selçuk (melis.ornekogluselcuk@ugent.be).
See you there!
