Step into the world of biomaterials with BIOtopia and discover how waste streams are becoming the raw materials of the future. Our bio-based discovery lab demonstrates how you can transform bio-based waste streams into innovative materials and lets you experience first-hand how science and sustainability come together. Discover how you can come up with surprising applications yourself: from mushrooms to mycelium leather and from starch to bioplastics.
BIOtopia is a VLAIO STEM development project aimed at young people aged 14 to 18 and addresses two current challenges: (1) The urgent need for a sustainable and circular society within the framework of the European Green Deal. (2) Actively involving young people in the bio-based innovations of tomorrow by strengthening their research and design skills. The project is an initiative of Howest in collaboration with, amongst others, Inagro, Quindo, Earth, Plant & Fiber (EPF) and various bioneers. The project builds on previous co-creative and multidisciplinary initiatives within The Enterprise, and the Design, Technology & Arts and Business & Media clusters. By bridging the gap between education, research and the professional world, BIOtopia aims not only to inspire young people in a sustainable way, but also to contribute to a future-proof bio-based construction sector.
