Brecht Heytens

The work of the Belgian artist Brecht Heytens (Leuven, 1989) straddles the boundary between raw material and immaterial poetry.
His installations bring together three seemingly contradictory elements in a delicate balance: the rigidity of steel, the organic and uncontrollable nature of plaster, and the transience of light.
Whilst the steel frame acts as the load-bearing, geometric skeleton, the plaster intervenes as a solidified memory of a physical creative process. 
Heytens defies the laws of gravity by allowing these heavy, fundamental elements to interact with artificial light. 
The light cuts through the structure and the space, transforming the installation into a three-dimensional spatial drawing. The work compels the visitor to draw closer and feel the tension between control and chaos, mass and emptiness.
