The Linen Project explores contemporary sustainable narratives from flax seed to linen fibre and beyond, through collective hands-on projects.
The Linen Stewards is an inspiring collective that brings together 20 participants from different backgrounds - including agriculture, design, art, heritage and sociology - and encourages the exchange of ideas, stories and products for a more sustainable future.

For a year, they cultivate a flax field together, going through every step of the process - from seed to fibre to various end products - under the guidance of experts. Veronique Standaert (General Belgian Flax Association) guides the group through the fieldwork from seed to flax plant and fibre. Designer Sep Verboom takes the group through various sustainable and biobased design practices and inspires when handling the harvest.

1m2 flax also invites the public to participate and sow, harvest and process their own square metre of flax in their own garden. The result? Many new insights and a homemade napkin that participants take to a communal lunch at the end of the project.

The Linen Project is a project of Texture, museum of flax and textiles, ecological farm De Heerlijkheid van Heule, Algemeen Belgisch Vlasverbond, Inagro and Designregio Kortrijk, in collaboration with The Linen Project Nederland. Together, they are building a community that recognises and appreciates the origin of their materials and the processes involved.
