This Username Is Already In Use

This Username Is Already In Use (2025) by artist Adèle Sweetlove explores how digital data and AI shape our identity. Sweetlove analysed all the personal data that apps had collected about her and used it to have AI create a new character. In a video, an artificial voice describes this identity whilst playing a symbolic game against herself using pieces of glass on a stained-glass window. The work was created in her grandfather’s studio, bringing analogue craftsmanship and family history into dialogue with artificial intelligence. In addition, the work features a fragile glass platform that alludes to our vulnerable online presence. The work raises questions about the influence of chatbots, digital personalities and a society in which we are constantly visible.
