This modular candlestick abstracts the layered structure of a pine cone into simple shapes, the repetition of which allows for new configurations. By connecting and rearranging components, a single basic shape becomes a flexible design tool that can take on ever-changing variations and functions.

As a designer, Lio Merckx likes to let her creative process guide her. It is a process driven by trial and error, in which a happy coincidence sometimes determines the direction towards the final outcome. Daring to fail and persevering are key elements in this. Furthermore, in her practice, she always starts by looking at which objects and materials already exist, so that she can work in a more sustainable way.
