A vase is an object that surrounds us in our daily live, where it used as a “container” of some kind. In my work the functionality of the vase is unimportant. The vase is rather used as an object to capture an abstraction of a feeling, a memory, an observation.
Mieke Delvaeye makes use of the coiling technique to make the objects. This process allows her to make pieces with a minimum of tools and a maximum of freedom. The freedom of expression is an important part in her work, during the making process of a piece but also during its completion. As a general concept, imperfections and asymmetries that come to live while creating a piece, are embraced and become one with the work.
During the glazing process, she likes to experiment with slip engobes and different kind of glazes, that can be applied to the work in different ways, like brushing, pouring, applying with syringes. The different layers (up to 10) are allowed to interact with each other during the firing process creating the unique surfaces.
The objects capture a moment in time, evoke a sense of freedom. They are a source of human expression, in a highly technological world, where you can find beauty in imperfection and asymmetry. The pieces interact with their surroundings, inviting the viewer to feel, see, observe and discover.
