Drifting Marks is a tapestry inspired by two journeys. During a walk along Boston Harbor, I noticed a wall full of colorful lobster buoys, each with a unique color pattern that fishermen use to identify their own buoy. These visual signs and colors formed the basis of my design. Back in the Netherlands, I worked in the studio of textile artist Joana Schneider, where I learned techniques to wrap ropes with colored yarn, a method I later developed further in my own style. Sustainability played an important role in this project. Together with EE Exclusives, we consciously chose to use deadstock: leftover yarns from the industry that would otherwise go to waste. In Drifting Marks, craftsmanship and sustainability come together in a layered work of color, form, and texture. The tapestry refers to the lobster buoys, the techniques I learned, and the stories from my travels, creating a tangible memory of place, encounter, and material.
