Simon Debosscher and Seppe Bultynck present an installation in and around the southern Broel Tower, the “Speytorre”, where the tower itself is the substantive starting point. Inside, a prefabricated concrete wall reveals a mural of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, a Kortrijk and Flemish historical moment sometimes viewed with suspicion today. The image only becomes visible when you look through a carefully placed peephole.
Outside, Simon contrasts with a large, brittle flag referring to Kortrijk's ephemeral textile industry. Subject to wind and weather, the flag symbolises the transience of power and memory.
The installation shows two interpretations of power that have changed and acquired different meanings throughout history. It invites visitors to reflect on the interaction between past and present and prompts a conversation about history, power and what we prefer not to recognise.
